Ten thoughts from ten years in the Public Sector…

On April 13th 2003 I joined the world of the Public Sector. Wow.  I had arrived in the land of Milk and Honey.  I left school (ok, I was politely asked to leave) in 1984 aged 16.  My working life started as a labourer in a rural timber yard.  The timber yard was the kind of place where the works van doubled as the ambulance; it had blood spatters on the roof lining and could find its way to the local hospital without a driver.  But life in the Public Sector, now this was different.  Here was an organisation with health and safety policies, a generous pension scheme and subsidised massage sessions.  Yes, I succumbed.  In the timber yard, the busy, rough, noisy (and masseur-less) timber yard, neither I nor the people that worked with me, or the boss that managed us, used cool management buzzwords like synergy, additionality or the ultimate F word, facilitate … had anyone been tempted to say to a fellow worker in the yard, “would you like me to facilitate the safe lifting of that large stack of nine by four timbers to leverage some additionality to our roles and create a synergistic partnership”, they would have been quickly exposed to an express programme of cultural alignment.  They were simple if not always easy times.

So over the next few days in the run up to the 10th anniversary of my life in the Public Sector I thought I’d mark the occasion by sharing some thoughts about a few of the things that make the Public Sector so interesting for a former private sector person like me.  I hope you find them interesting, perhaps insightful and maybe even a little entertaining…
